With the onset of the pandemic, Indian cities saw a sudden spike in the usage of cycling, fueling the launch of the India Cycles4Change Challenge. ‘Cycle-friendly Doddanekundi’ is working towards developing the city’s first neighborhood cycling network to prioritize cycling for neighborhood-level trips and commutes.

This project aims to accomplish the following:

  • Testing separated cycle lanes along primary and secondary routes;

  • Evaluate different types of cycle lanes in terms of design, safety & ease of navigation;

  • Encourage more people in the ward to cycle;

  • Connect to key destinations - places of work, schools and colleges, parks, lakes, shopping areas, etc.; and

  • Consult with a broad range of stakeholders like residents, commercial associations, etc. for the implementation of the pilot.

A three-weekend participatory design workshop was conducted with cyclists from the community as well as young design professionals. The workshop was structured in the form of an activity mapping session, a presentation on best practices culminated with a collective brainstorming for design solutions.

Standards and principles adopted in various other cycle-friendly cities, both Indian and international were studied. These were appropriated for our site based on space availability and the speed of vehicles.

The site of the pilot route was studied through various lenses such as land use, road typology, site activities, critical destinations, etc.

Each issue category and sub-category was accounted for with appropriate design solutions. These were broadly classified on the basis of infrastructural requirements, policy enforcement, and awareness/behavior change initiatives

The diagram above depicts the results from the existing cyclists' survey. Data points gathered from the Audit became issues to solve, making the design development highly contextual. Click HERE to see the interactive Map version of Handlebar Survey Data.

The chosen route was divided into segments to solve for. Streetmix was used to generate sectional road revisions in accordance with the proposed bike network. A sample sectional is shown above on the right while the left shows the existing road. The feasibility framework depicted in the diagram below was used to arrive at the final network. The complete pilot network along with junction details is shown in the 2 subsequent maps.
